Ebb & Flow was written in the summer of 2014 as part of ISAM (the International Summer Academy of Music) in Ochsenhausen, Germany over 10 days. At the end of the ten days, it was rehearsed and performed as part of the Josef Dorfman International Composition Competition, where it received first prize.nThe competition required the use of the “Dorfman cryptogram”, which is the solfege syllables “do-re-fa-mi-la” translating to “C-D-F-E-A”. I took the inversion of that theme, “C-Bb-G-Ab-Eb,” and rearranged the direction of the final intervals to create the main theme of Ebb & Flow “C-Bb-G-F#-Db.
